Growing Tips & Maintenace
- Dependable, very drought tolerant plant, self-seeding freely. Prune spent flowers back to promote fresh growth and contain seeding. Does best in full sun.
Note
Additional Notes
- Due to its high sulphur content, the foliage of chives is repulsive to insects. Farmers are known to plant chives as border plants or between rocks to protect their crops from pests. The flowers can be used as a garnish in culinary dishes. Chives do not lose their taste or texture when frozen. The juice from the leaves is used to fight fungal infections. Allium schoenosprams 'Album' is a seed selection of the north american native found originally in Newfoundland. Remove fading flowers to prevent self-seeding as the new seedlings may revert back to common pink flowering chives.
